Each person in our classroom has an assigned number and a basket in which he or she chooses a book that he or she thinks other people in our class should read. Usually, four to five students will have their choices featured here. This week it's my turn to feature a book. In addition, each students' choice for the week will be listed.
Mrs. Narita's Featured Book One of my favorite summer reads was Amina's Voice by Hena Khan. There are many outstanding reasons to root for this book. It highlights friendship and the jealousy that arises when one's close friend welcomes another person into what was previously a circle of two. It shines a spotlight on a community's kindness in the aftermath of a hate crime. It also celebrates the heroine, Amina, finding her voice. But honestly, all those reasons aren't the primary reason why I'm recommending this book. I'm recommending this book because it makes me homesick for Illinois and Wisconsin and all the fabulous people who live in both states. When Khan spotlighted the Packers/ Bear rivalry, it was as if I were transported back in time to holiday dinners of my childhood. An important, fun read you don't want to miss!
