When I spotted When Green Becomes Tomatoes in The Vermont Book Shop, I knew I couldn't leave the store without it, but I didn’t know why. Then, it dawned on me that this book could be used in my fourth grade classroom to create community as well as excitement about poetry and art throughout the school year. The title of each poem is a date, and thirty-three of those dates occur during the school year. So, on those dates, the poem will be printed on chart paper, and students will have the opportunity to illustrate the chart paper as part of their morning work routine. At the end of the year, each child will be able to take one poem home as a memento of their fourth grade year. Cheers!
